Hey cats – I’m taking preorders for personalized watercolor conbadges at FC. They are $30 per (as opposed to $35 at my table during the con) and I aim to have them completed by Thursday evening, so I can either hand it off to you on Thursday or you can pick it up from my table on Friday.
Just fill out this form here!
On account of being busy out of my mind with Further Confusion this weekend there is no possible way I’m going to have a comic up this week, I am totally up to my eyeballs in con work. If you’re at the con, find us in the dealer’s hall at table 82, our table is right up against the center aisle and the banner’s on the endcap. Otherwise, we will see you next week!
Guys I know that if skipping two weeks is going to become a staple of the convention experience, there’s not going to be much reason to hope to see me at one, so I’ma do my best to get the comic done sometime on Sunday; but right now I am sick, and I don’t want to do anything, on account of I have come down with what our people colloquially refer to as the con crud.
On the upside this is probably the last convention anyone can expect to see me at until around May – I’m planning on sending some art off to FWA for the art show but won’t be in attendance myself. I mean unless someone wants to pay my way. Should I take up donations for a FWA trip? I dunno. Probably not. I hear it gets humid in Georgia, anyway. So next on the convention calendar is Fanime, also here in downtown San Jose, with Califur and (possibly?) Anthrocon shortly after that.
Further Confusion was pretty danged fantastic. I’ve never done as well, monetarily speaking, at a convention as I did last weekend. I have a fair amount of homework to do after the con as far as badges and sketchbooks and stuff to finish, and prints were selling like gangbusters. Once things have settled down next week, expect me to restock laser tags and put some new prints and originals up in the store.
Otherwise, check back Sunday night or Monday morning if I haven’t surrendered myself to the consumption by then.
It’s Valentines day and I can think of no better way to express my love for you than to call your attention to the collection of cards that the My Brother, My Brother, and Me podcast has put together, and to call your attention to my own contribution to it.
I will warn you, lest you be scandalized, that it dips into blue language that I generally avoid using here. Also, geese engaging in carnal acts. I apologize in advance.
But the love doesn’t stop there! At the end of the day today I will be selecting the winners of the Dourif-Haley drawing, which you still have time to enter.
As I said before, three people will be selected to win these very slick acrylic keyrings, etched with a tiger design. And! If you didn’t want to take your chances, you are now able to purchase it immediately from the store, along with two other acrylic keyrings.
The winners of the drawing will be announced tomorrow, when I post the comic. I’m going to cut off entries at about 11pm pacific.
Hey guys, it looks like since it’s the start of the month, they’ve reset the ballots over on Topwebcomics, so there’s a possibility of getting The Dawn Chapel on the frontpage. If you could take a moment to vote it up (and you can vote again every 24 hours), you know that I would be very grateful. It’ll take you, like, two clicks. Three, tops.
So you may have noticed that I added a section in the sidebar there called ‘from the network’; I added it after Immelmann introduced me to a service called Scribol, which is some sort of social network traffic exchange thing. I did a bit of digging and it looks like there’s a whole universe of these websites that basically exist to drive traffic to each other, and their profit model seems to be based on advertising on the landing page that each link takes you to on the way to your intended destination. They’re the next evolution in splogs, basically, but Scribol has been courting webcomics directly.
The advertised principle is that I send them a hit, and then they send me three hits in return. Since signing up with Scribol this weekend, they’ve sent me about 1200 hits, which is a significant increase over my usual. And I’ve only sent them maybe 20. Not a bad trade! More significant is that hits from Scribol seem to average 7 pages per visit, with only a quarter of them bouncing off immediately. Compare that to hits from Stumbleupon or Reddit, where the bounce rate is between 80-90%. So, yes, worth it.
I did a bit of digging around and am looking at two other networks to experiment with, Awsmer and Wahoha, since there doesn’t seem to be any rule on these sites about running links from other networks, and those two seem to be the least gross out of the constellation of traffic exchangers in terms of malware and pop-under advertising, and their user interface is much, much better than Scribol’s.
But neither of them seem to be as directly relevant to The Dawn Chapel as there is no webcomics category like Scribol has (I’m limited to broad terms like ‘art and design’, ‘funny’, ‘animals’, etc) and the links I see them putting in my sidebar give me hives – every single variation of the ’25 most x of y‘ linkbait toplist makes me just want to punch everything into orbit, and content like herp derp check out these sexy photoshops that both of these networks seem to adore just feels really inappropriate right next to the social justice blogs, so I’m waffling back and forth on keeping them. If they send me the same kind of numbers that Scribol does, it might be worth dirtying my hands with them, but if not I’ll drop them.
Edit: Yeah, every time I reload the page with the Awsmer widget, without fail there is something there that makes my gorge rise. Ditching that one.
Oh, and please don’t feel like you’re doing me any favors on clicking those links just to improve my stats – if something is interesting to you, by all means click through, but don’t go rewarding obnoxious, exploitative material just for the sake of puffing my numbers.
Gonna try to get two pages done for you this week, but I am not good for getting anything done at the moment. Now’s a good time to become acquainted with how to subscribe to rss feeds if you get tired of checking back and not seeing new comics.
