‘A Fine Day Out’ wins San Jose Public Library’s Graphic Novel Contest

Hey cats! The short story A Fine Day Out took first place in the Adult section of the Graphic Novel Contest hosted by the San Jose Public Libraries. You’ll find us at the awards ceremony at the Martin Luther King branch this Saturday afternoon, shaking hands and preening and being beautiful.

If you’re local, be sure to come say hello! The website says they’ll have refreshments there and I bet that means they’ll have little cubes of fancy cheeses on toothpicks, and seriously that’s worth the price of admission* right there, I love that stuff. If they do, I intend to eat a completely silly amount of them.

*there is no admission fee.

So I am going to have to beg your patience one more time, readers.

I’ve said a few times that this is an exercise in getting into the habit of doing comics on a weekly basis and sometimes the experiment doesn’t work, because I’m still having to learn a lot about how to make comics. And this isn’t just in how to tell a story visually, bear in mind – it’s also in figuring out how to structure my life around a regular update schedule and develop good work habits so that I can keep at it.

I’ve got one more page of The Apex Predator coming, and it will go up sometime this weekend. After this I have a five-page narrative story planned, and I’m going to change up the format (and my personal schedule in creating these comics) to something that is more sustainable.

I know it’s not exactly a webcomic, but if you’re enjoying the Apex Predator series, I’d lay paper on the likelihood that you’ll also like Simon’s Cat.

Dogfights

In building up to the launch of the indie game Overgrowth, Wolfire Studios is running this comic, which I have to assume provides some backstory or at least shows a little more of the world they’re building. The artwork is very frantic and energetic, done by a very skilled concept artist, and the story so far mostly involves dog people stabbing each other.
